Namesake

The NISD Board of Trustees has named the “Stevens Ranch area” middle school located at 14045 Bella Vista Place after Dr. Joe J. Bernal. The school will open in August of 2014, and was funded by the voter-approved School Bond 2010. 

Bernal is a former state senator representing San Antonio, as well as a former member of the State Board of Education. Before he became an elected official, Bernal worked as a school teacher and served as assistant superintendent in Harlandale ISD. He is credited for authoring the first Texas bilingual education act as a state Senator in 1969.

All Northside elementary schools will have digital security surveillance cameras and access controls installed over the next 18 months.
