Celebrating its 20th year, the Northside Education Foundation (NEF) will recognize six outstanding NISD graduates as Pillars of Character at its annual gala. These six outstanding graduates include philanthropists, a military musician, a cutting-edge surgeon, multi-tasking physician, and a former intelligence officer.

A sea of bright blue t-shirts filled the neighborhoods near Ross MS, and Esparza, Linton, Martin, Powell, and Villarreal elementary schools as 500 teachers took to the streets for the fourth annual Community Block Walk.

Around 105,000 students and 7,200 teachers headed back to the classroom when 117 schools opened their doors on Monday. Joining the District is Herbert G. Boldt Elementary School. Boldt is the 75th elementary school in NISD.

Before 105,000 students arrive for the first day of school on Aug. 24, a brigade of new teachers first have to be schooled.  More than 800 new and new-to-Northside ISD teachers went “back-to-school” during New Teacher Academy, an intense three-day professional development designed to share the culture and the expectations of South Texas’ largest school district as well as learn about the dozens of resources and curriculum support specialists available to them.

Thirty-nine thousand students at 49 Northside ISD schools will receive free breakfast and lunch this coming school year thanks to the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act which will provide the financial support needed, according to Dr. Brian T. Woods, superintendent.

But, in front of several hundred of his peers at the annual Administrator Institute, Sumpter was named the recipient of the 2015 Ed Rawlinson Innovator of the Year award.

For students who have yet to have update their immunizations, University Health System will have its mobile clinic available at Gustafson Stadium, located at Loop 410 and Culebra. The "shots bus" will be there from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24 through Wednesday, Aug. 26.  Parents should be aware that by waiting this late, students may miss the first day of school.

So You Think You Can Dance is a popular reality television show, but the reality of watching the San Antonio Deaf Dance Company perform is truly show-stopping. The Company’s public performance is Friday, July 31 at 7 p.m. in the Marshall High School Auditorium, 8000 Lobo Lane. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

Northside ISD has partnered with Methodist Health Care to offer baseline concussion testing to middle and high school athletes. Every year, more than three million sports-related concussions occur, mostly in middle and high school athletes. To that end, NISD athletes have the opportunity to participate in an ImPACT® Baseline Concussion Test on Saturday, July 25 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Methodist Health Care System, 8109 Fredericksburg Road. It is time for families to start updating their immunizations in order to be prepared to return to school for the 2015-16 school year. Some students may not have the requisite number of shots and not know it due to the state increasing the number of shots required at various grade levels.
