Health Careers High School was named the No. 1 high school in San Antonio by Children at Risk, a Houston-based nonprofit organization that researched and ranked all San Antonio area public schools.

Clark High School was No. 7 and O'Connor High School was No. 9 in the high school category. Thornton Elementary School made the top 10 in the elementary school category, coming in at No. 6.

"Students and staff, you're really what makes a great school," Superintendent John Folks said. "Congratulations to all of you."

Children at Risk used 14 indicators to evaluate schools, including the four-year graduation rate, participation in advanced coursework, and performance on college entrance exams.

"We are excited that Health Careers High School has set the bar for San Antonio schools to follow, with their rigorous curriculum and innovative teaching methods," said Dr. Robert Sanborn, president and CEO of Children at Risk.
