Timeline of Northside history installed at NISD Museum

History now literally lines the walls of the NISD Museum, located in the restored old Leon Valley School at the corner of Grissom and Bandera roads.

A timeline of Northside ISD history recently was installed at the Museum to highlight integral dates, including the opening of new schools, establishment of new policies and educational programs, and important Board decisions. The timeline is similar to wallpaper border and wraps around the three main rooms of the museum and Partnership offices.

The timeline begins in 1949, when 11 one-room school houses were consolidated to create Northside ISD. The project was funded by the Northside Education Foundation and the NISD Museum Association.

"Northside has a rich history that is interwoven with the history of the community that it serves," said Pat Blattman, Chairwoman of the Museum Association. "We think that anyone who has been connected in any way with Northside or the Northside community will find the timeline as well as current and future displays very interesting."

Members of the community are welcome to visit the Museum to search for dates and to submit additions or edits to the timeline.

The Northside School Museum Association is dedicated to preserving the history of NISD. Membership is free and open to anyone who has an interest in local history, including retirees, former employees, parents, and community members.

Upcoming exhibits that the Museum Association is developing include: The Early Rural Schools prior to 1949, The Changing Face of NISD 1949 - Present, The History of Athletics in NISD, Early Settlers and Immigration in NISD, and Armed Forces - NISD Connections.

An ongoing project is the expansion of the Museum's oral history library. Dozens of people have been interviewed including former trustees, superintendents, employees, students, and families of early settlers in the area. Selected stories soon will be on continuous display in the Museum.

In addition, the Museum Association welcomes the donation of items, photos, or documents (or copies) related to the history of the District.

The Museum Association meets at 10 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. For more information, please call (210) 397-8599.
